To keep abreast of the latest innovation in the prospect of ‘smart food safety’, a visit to Hong Kong Internet of Things Centre of Excellence ("The IoT Centre") was arranged. During the visit, students experienced how innovative applications and adoptions of IoT technologies enhance smarter businesses and better lives. Students also understood how the GS1 barcode works in food traceability, ensuring food quality and consumer safety.
GS1 is a not-for-profit organization that develops and maintains global standards for business communication. The GS1 System of Standards is a set of global standards that enables the unique identification of all trade items, processes, services, assets, companies and locations at any point in the supply chain. The best known of these standards is the barcode, a symbol printed on products that can be scanned electronically. GS1 barcodes are now being used for retail, e-commerce, food and food services and healthcare services etc.
